Wind Augmentation PurifYing Unit (WAYU)
Air pollution is a local problem and its solution can be derived from technologies coupled with local conditions and requirements. Creating change in meteorological parameters like wind with the help of devices such as fans and also removal of the pollutant near to the source may help in reducing ambient air pollutants. In a highly complex geometry of urban canopy, wind flows are characterized by manifold recirculation regions overlapping with complex structures. The fluid motions’ governing the dispersion is highly turbulent and are influenced by both large-scale meteorological conditions and small scale gravitational and thermal effect. Understanding all these aspects related to pollutant dispersion is very important while designing a mitigation strategy at a particular location of pollution concentration. In the past, many improvements in fuel quality and vehicle engine technology have been made leading to better air quality. However, increased numbers of vehicles are directly affecting the benefits of other efforts made.
With a view to address the issue of traffic intersection pollution, this study has been under taken by CSIR-NEERI in developing a device called Wind Augmentation purifYing Unit (WAYU). This will have a significant positive impact on the health of urban population especially, the people commuting, residing or working near traffic intersections.
